The Holidays Are Coming!
As the holiday season is rapidly approaching and we scurry about trying to find the best gifts for our family and friends, teachers, postmen, the neighbor and the friend of a friend that was nice to you at the last get together you went to. Do we go to the packed out Mall hours away? Shop online for a gift that, when and if it arrives, looks nothing like it did when you ordered it? Or do we shop smarter, while helping out the community at the same time?
Listen, I don’t want to drag the Mall, I personally love the mall before Christmas. The string lights blinking, store windows decorated in reds and greens, the gigantic Christmas tree standing tall at the center with Santa’s chair in front, the Christmas melodies floating down from the speakers. That being said, the crowds can feel overwhelming, the kids who never wanted to meet Santa face to face are screaming (mine included) and the shops can feel so impersonal. They are busy, swamped even with the masses running in and out trying to find the perfect gift for little Timmy on their child’s baseball team or their Uncle Christopher who they haven’t seen since last Christmas. Most years I get frustrated. My good mood vanishes, I want shopping to be O-V-E-R and I just want to go home. BUT HOME IS 2 HOURS AWAY! If only there was another choice…
How about online? How could this possibly be anything but a great idea? I click a few buttons, enter in my credit card information, wait for them to ship it straight to my front door… winner, winner, Christmas dinner! Then, the gift arrives, the blanket I found for my cousin, arrived 2 months after I bought it, is 2 sizes too small. Seriously, it would cover my son, He’s two! Now, it is 2 weeks to Christmas and I have to find another gift. Joy to the World, I’m about to scream. If only there had been another choice…
It’s that simple. Those pesky crowds, who overtook the mall…they are still pushing their way through the front of the store, as you walk right in to a shop on Tennessee Street. They are still waiting for the shop attendant to acknowledge them, while you have had a 10 minute chat with the owner of the store. They are leaving with nothing, while you are weighed down with uniquely beautiful gifts for the ones you love. If you are like me…maybe something for yourself as well.
Instead of the 2 hour drive home, you have 5, 10, 20 minutes? Gas is saved. Miles aren’t lost. Your attitude is bright and shiny like Santa’s shoes, but that’s not all you have done.
You just helped out your community. Grown our local economy. Helped the entrepreneur of this town grow their business. You helped their employees. Their families. Their life. You did that. Pat yourself on the back, you deserve it!
We live, breath and work in this town. Our kids grow up in this town. We eat in this town. Why not give, not only to our friends and family this holiday season, but back to this town. It doesn’t have to be just this town of Murphy. Support our neighboring towns as well. There is Andrews, Hayesville, Hiawassee, Blairsville, Blueridge, each unique with stores and people you should meet on your Holiday shopping adventure.
Happy Shopping Everyone!
We at The DuPree Group, wish you a very Merry Christmas! & a Happy Hanukkah!
